Why does Death Stranding 2 crash with VRAM error 0x000000117?

I was frustrated by frequent crashes in Death Stranding 2, with VRAM error code 0x000000117 appearing at 88℃. I tried overclocking the VRAM frequency, but it doubled the crash rate. I used GamePP System Backup & Config Export to save my current state and rolled back to the previous stable driver version. MemTest86 showed the error rate dropped from 15 times/min to 0 times/min. With temperatures now stable at 75℃, the game runs flawlessly. This backup strategy saved me from having to rebuild my entire system configuration from scratch.
