Why is my Noctua NH-D15S causing frame drops in BioShock 4?
Exploring the underwater city was great until a massive frame drop hit me out of nowhere—the contrast in smoothness was just jarring. Looking at the data, even though the Noctua NH-D15S is a beast, the fan response delay was causing core temps to bounce between 70℃ and 88℃ during sudden load spikes. I tried locking the fans to max speed, but I lost that signature Noctua silence, which felt like a huge compromise. Instead, I went into the BIOS and slashed the fan response time from 2 seconds down to 0.5 seconds and applied a slight -0.04V offset to the core. Using RTSS, I saw the frame time variance tighten to 11-16ms, making the game feel way more fluid. I did deal with some annoying fan 'surging' at first, but adding a 5℃ hysteresis window smoothed everything out. Now the CPU stays between 72-78℃ with fans at 1200 RPM. The stutters are gone, and the system feels balanced again.
